Practice what you preach!

Further to my blog last night, I managed to get some of the foods to help my joints into my diet today:

  • Salmon (smoked salmon sandwich for breakfast)
  • Banana (snack)
  • Avocado (and chicken sandwich for lunch)

And dinner (pictured) included the following from the list:

  • Turmeric
  • Ginger
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Garlic

Along with chicken, new potatoes, carrots and Chia seeds.

I’ll keep it up and see if it makes a difference!

So this past week I’ve been a tad creaky!  My knees have been stiff and my sprained ankle is still taking some time to heal – so I thought tonight I would have a quick look at foods that are supposed to help joints and see if adding them in will make a difference or not!

Feel the fear

I’ve spent most of today preparing myself mentally and physically for a course I’m doing tomorrow – I have no idea what to expect and I’ll be with a group of people I’ve never met – being a naturally shy person it’s a little out of my comfort zone but –

I’m going to feel the fear and do it anyway!

Use the force!

I had one of those ‘Duh, of course’ moments today.

I watched a Ted Talks short video today on ‘how to stop screwing yourself over’.

One of the points to come out of it is that to create changes in our lives, to create the new habits and come off autopilot in our lives we have to force ourselves to start with.  We simply won’t feel like doing what we have set out to do every day but then who feels like coming out of our comfort zone when it is so, well, comfortable?

I mentioned in an earlier blog about how I’m looking to find ways to be a ‘morning’ person as it’s something I struggle with.  I want to attempt to see if I can change this, I had in my mind that I would find fancy schmancy ways which I would find inspiring and have me leaping out of bed with a huge grin on my face…

Mel Robbins, in the Ted Talks video, puts it a little more bluntly.  Put the alarm on 30 mins earlier than intended and when it goes off whip the covers off and stand up.  This sounds like utter hell for me.  However, Robbins has a point – while we grew up we had our parents tell us (or nag us) to do the things we didn’t feel like doing but should do.  Now, we have to do that for ourselves – we can choose not to – however, by not doing some of these key things and just allowing ourselves to continue on autopilot or ‘snoozing’ we’re missing out on so much.

Robbins also mentioned a 5 second rule – that if no action is taken within 5 seconds of having a thought of doing something out of the norm or your comfort zone that the brain puts a halt to it and the moment has passed.  How much are we missing out on?  And who wants to miss out?!

I feel like I have already been using ‘the force’ by doing my daily blog, ensuring I am eating and drinking healthily every day and doing exercise – and now I need to spread it further into my life.

Sometimes the well runs dry – and that’s okay.

I wanted to write something well thought out or have something substantial to say today but nothing has come to me.  I had a good long think and I read a few other blogs for inspiration but still nothing came.  I started to get frustrated but instead I have decided it’s okay – that this note will be it.  That the point of this blog for me is to ensure that I consciously think about what I am doing each day to move towards the life that I want for myself. And that is something I am succeeding in.  I am present, focused and I still do at least one thing each day which is a step in that direction.

So if you feel that sometimes no matter how hard you try it just isn’t happening – give yourself a break, it’s okay.

Misunderstood

Have you had that moment when something you’ve said has been taken the wrong way?

Or there’s the situation where someone passes judgement on what you’re doing instead of asking you the background to it?

I used to think it was worth clarifying and justifying myself but as I’ve become older experience has shown me that it’s not worth my energy. People like to be right and some like to have their say – just let them get on with it. If you’re happy with the choices you make, the things you do and the things you say then why let anything else affect you? Of course if something that has been said has been misunderstood and caused offence then clarify it but pick and choose when that’s appropriate – some people don’t care to hear it because they’d rather thrive on the drama whereas others appreciate it.

Anyway how does this all tie in to healthbecomesme?

My lifestyle, thoughts, words, everything is changing from what has been the norm and it has met interesting reactions. Normally, adverse reactions or ridicule would send doubts through my mind but the reasons why I am on this journey are so strong that I no longer care what others think. Seeing people I love go through serious health issues – and losing some of them because of it – is enough to shake me up and wake up to what is truly important.

Take care of yourself and prioritise that.

We only get One chance at life – live it – with no regrets.

SOS! Sunday Organic Shop

Evening All.  Today I did one of my favourite things….food shopping… . joking, I hate it.  I was going to attempt  shopping in ASDA to find some cheaper organic food but on seeing the humongous queues I turned around and walked back out – sod that!

So erring on the side of laziness, instead of shopping around I did a full shop at Whole Foods, something I’m not certain I’ll be repeating judging by the bill, I definitely think I need to do a bit more investigating in sourcing where to buy organic.

The general idea is reduce my exposure to foods that have been injected with hormones, covered in pesticides or genetically modified.  Of course I realise I’m not going to eradicate this from my life completely, especially if I don’t want to become one of those annoying picky people when eating out, and there will also, I’m sure, be some occasions when I want to buy a particular thing and perhaps I can’t find the organic version.  I did find this interesting article that listed out 4 foods that are probably best avoided if you can’t find the organic version, I’m sure there are more than 4 but it’s a starting point:  http://www.healthfreedoms.org/4-foods-you-should-defintely-buy-organic/

Anyway, in the interests of a short comparison here are a few organic items from Whole Foods compared with ASDA:

  • broccoli:  ASDA 98p ; Whole Foods:  £1.78 (although was much bigger than the ASDA broccoli)
  • tomatoes: ASDA £1.74 (only had pack of 4 and no organic cherry tomatoes)  ; Whole Foods: £2.29 (on vine cherry tomatoes)
  • cucumber: ASDA 97p ; Whole Foods: £1.99
  • Yeo yoghurt:  both the same at £1.50
  • Diced beef: both the same at £4.99

I will keep on the search to see what other comparisons I can find… when the mood strikes – I may have better success that way!
